NATIONAL NEWS UPDATES

The Delhi government decided to call off the roll-out of the odd-even scheme that was to remain in force from November 13 to 17. This decision came after the National Green Tribunal said that the scheme will have to be implemented without any exemptions given to two-wheelers and cars driven by women.

2. Kerala soon to have e-policing kiosks

The Kerala Police plans to set up “virtual police stations or e-policing kiosks” at railway stations, airports, bus terminals, parks, public places, tourist spots, weekend destinations, and festival areas across the State.This will make the reporting and complaining faster. It will also save a lot of time.

3. Telangana government declares Urdu as it second official language

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has declared Urdu as the state’s second official language. Every office in the state will now have an Urdu speaking officer.

4. Bike ambulances to be introduced in Delhi from January

The bike ambulance facilities would be introduced on a pilot basis in Delhi in January 2018. Initially, it will be rolled out for three districts of Delhi. This will be introduced to tackle the congested roads during peak traffic hours.
5. Centre approves creation of National Testing Agency

The Union Cabinet approved the creation of a National Testing Agency (NTA) which will conduct entrance examinations for higher educational institutions.
NTA will conduct exams like the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – and the All India Council for Technical Education. This would relieve the burden from the CBSE and AICTE.

6. Kerala Launches ‘She Pad’ Scheme For Female School Students

The Kerala government has launched a ‘She Pad’ scheme to ensure that girl students get access to free sanitary pads. It will be applicable to those studying in government schools and aided private schools affiliated to the state board. This is for the first time that any state government is distributing free sanitary pads to school students. It will be implemented by the Kerala Women Development Corporation with the support of local self-governing bodies. They will provide a storage space for napkins and an incinerator to dispose used pads. The pads will be handed out by the corporation to the schools depending on the number of girl students in the said establishment.

7. Delhi to bring back odd-even car rationing scheme from Nov. 13 to 17

The odd-even car rationing scheme will be enforced in Delhi for five days from November 13. The decision is due to spike in the air pollution levels. Under the policy, private vehicles are allowed to run based on the last number of their licence plates. Odd-numbered cars are allowed to run on odd dates and even-numbered cars on even dates.

8. President Kovind Launches Bihar Krishi Road Map 2017-2022 in Patna

The Bihar Krishi Road Map 2017-2022 was launched by President Ram Nath Kovind in Patna. This is third such road map and will provide coordinated plans for the development of agriculture in the state. All concerned Departments under state government have been directed to design their policies keeping the welfare of farmers in mind.
9. Train to Bangladesh flagged off by Modi, Sheikh Hasina, Mamata
Bandhan Express, a new passenger train will run between India and Bangladesh. It will travel between Kolkata and Khulna. This will reduce travel time between Dhaka and Kolkata by nearly three hours. This is the second Indo-Bangla train service after Maitree Express.

A new species of ants have been discovered in the Periyar Tiger Reserve of Western Ghats. The new species has been named Tyrannomyrmex alii (or T. alii). The research was undertaken by Kalesh Sadasivan and Manoj Kripakaran.

15. Chennai has been included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network

Chennai has been included in the Creative Cities Network of UNESCO for its contributions to music. Jaipur and Varanasi have already been the part of list – list for their contributions to music and folk arts. Once the city has made its place to the coveted list, it holds cultural events for four years to highlight its USP. These are monitored by the UNESCO. 116 member cities from 54 countries are a part of CCN.

16. Banaganapalle mangoes, six others get GI tag

The Indian patent office has granted Geographical Indications to seven commodities. These include the famous Banaganapalle mangoes of Andhra Pradesh and Tulapanji rice of West Bengal, Pochampally Ikat of Telangana; Gobindobhog Rice of West Bengal; Durgi Stone Carvings and Etikoppaka Toys of Andhra Pradesh; and Chakshesang Shawl of Nagaland.The tag will help the products to get premium price in the market.

17. Himachal Pradesh to use EVMs with VVPAT machines on all booths during assembly elections

Himachal Pradesh will be the first state to use EVMs with VVPAT machines on all booths during assembly elections. The state will go to polls in a single phase.

18. DRDO Conducts Successful Flight Trial of ‘NIRBHAY’ Sub-Sonic Cruise Missile

DRDO successfully conducted the test flight of ‘NIRBHAY’, India’s first indigenously designed and developed Long Range Sub-Sonic Cruise Missile. It can be deployed from multiple platforms. The flight was test fired from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha.

19. SHe-Box, Online Complaint Management System for complaints of sexual harassment at workplace launched

SHe-Box, a comprehensive online complaint Management System for women to lodge complaints of sexual harassment at workplace has been launched by Ministry of Women and Child Development. This is for women working in both public and private organizations. It is a step to ensure the effective implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

20. India, Bangladesh Joint Military Combat Exercise ‘Sampriti’ begins

‘Sampriti-7’, the joint training exercise of India and Bangladesh began in Meghalaya and Mizoram. It is a 13-day exercise that will be conducted at India’s Jungle Warfare School at Vairengte in Mizoram and at the Joint Training Node at Umroi in Meghalaya.

21. India sets Guinness Record for cooking 918 kgs of Khichdi

India has achieved a Guinness World Record for cooking 918 kgs of Khichdi. The dish prepared using a 1000 litres stainless steel kadhai in a bid to promote Indian ingredients and cuisine. Chef Sanjeev Kapoor led the team of 50 people. The Khichdi was made using Chawal, Moong Beans, Amaranth, Jowar, Bajra and Indian spices.

22. China launches 2 navigation satellites

China has launched two BeiDou-3 satellites into space though a single carrier rocket, Long March-3B carrier rocket. It is building its own navigation system to compete with the US’s GPS. The satellites were launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwestern province of Sichuan. These two satellites represent the third phase of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. The BeiDou project was formally initiated in 1994. It started serving China in 2000 and the Asia Pacific region at the end of 2020.

23. China unveiled Asia’s largest artificial island-building ship

China unveiled Asia’s largest artificial island-building ship, Tian Kun Hao. It is a 140-metre-long vessel and is capable of digging 6,000 cubic metres an hour.

24. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata to get more airports

In order to accommodate the growing passenger traffic, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata will be soon getting their second airport.

25. Emirates NBD begins operations in India

Emirates NBD, Dubai’s second-largest bank has started its operations in Mumbai, India. It will invest USD 100 million capital into its Indian operations. The range of services will be offered to corporate, SME and institutional clients. It will support NRI customers looking for cross-border wealth management solutions.

26. GST slashed on 178 by the GST council

The Goods and Services Tax Council slashed the number of items in the highest tax rate of 28% to just 50. These include sin, demerit and luxury goods.The Council reduced the tax rate on 178 of current 228 items from 28% to 18%. Guar meal, sweet potatoes, and dried or frozen fish have been reduced to nil from 5%. All restaurants will be taxed at 5%, except those in hotels with a tariff of Rs. 7,500 or more, which will be taxed at 18% with input tax credit. These rates will be in effect from November 15.

27. Cabinet gives nod for expo centre

The Union Cabinet approved a proposal to develop an Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (ECC) in New Delhi. This will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹25,703 crore by 2025.

28. PM’s council sets out roadmap for skill development, job creation
The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister laid out a roadmap for stepping up skill development, job creation; enhanced resource investment in the social sector, including for health and education, and boosting infrastructure financing.

29. RBI diktat to make banking easier for seniors and the differently abled people

The banks will have to open a dedicated counter for senior citizens and differently abled persons. Banks will have to provide basic banking facilities at their door step and promptly update their systems on receipt of life certificate at any branch of the pension paying bank.The door step facilities include pick up of cash and instruments against receipt, delivery of cash against withdrawal from account, delivery of demand drafts, submission of Know Your Customer (KYC) documents and life certificate.

31. Digital Rath to spread awareness on cashless payments

Matercard in association with Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has launched a ‘digital rath’ to accelerate adoption of cashless payments among merchants in various cities. The aim is to reach out to around 10 lakh merchants in cities including Lucknow, Kolkata, Pondicherry, Navi Mumbai and Bhopal by December 31. The merchants will be informed about benefits of electronic payments and how to leverage the tool in expanding their business.

32. FSSAI launches logo for organic food products

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has launched an “Indian Organic Integrity Data Base”. The portal has been jointly developed by the FSSAI in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Participatory Guarantee System for India (PGS-India) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.This portal will help consumers verify the authenticity of organic food. The portal will provide the consumer with the information about the producer, the certification system and the availability of certified organic productsA common logo for ‘organic foods’ with the tagline ‘Jaivik Bharat’ has been introduced. This will help to distinguish organic product from non-organic ones.

33. Aadhaar-insurance link must

As a part of the Prevention of Money-laundering (Maintenance of Records) Second Amendment Rules, 2017, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has confirmed that it is mandatory and PAN/Form 60 to link Aadhaar with insurance policies.

IDFC Bank has entered into a “strategic alliance” with MobiKwik to launch a co-branded virtual Visa prepaid card for the Mobikwik’s customers.

35. Govt doubles import duty on wheat to 20 pc
The Central Board of Excise and Custom has doubled the import duty on wheat to 20% to curb cheap shipments. This is a positive price signal to farmers in the ongoing Rabi season.

49. India’s Second Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) Established at Anna University, Chennai

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, has signed an Institutional agreement with Anna University to establish India’s second Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) at the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR), Anna University, Chennai. The centre will be established under the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) TISC program.

59. India slips to 7th position in business optimism ranking: Grant Thornton survey
According to Grant Thornton’s International Business Report (IBR) survey, India has slipped to the 7th position this quarter in business optimism. This survey was conducted in September before the announcement of major reforms such as bank Recapitalisation and infrastructure investments among others. Regulations, red tape and lack of Information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure are India’s biggest growth constraints.
