1. Sunil Chhetri equals Messi’s record; joint second highest scorer among active players
Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri became the joint second highest international goal scorer among active players along with Argentine superstar Lionel Messi with his 64th strike for the country against Kenya in the Intercontinental Cup.Chhetri and Messi are currently in joint 21st in the all-time list of goal scorers. The Indian is just one goal below former Chelsea and Ivory Coast stalwart Didier Drogba (65 from 104 matches).
In terms of number of goals per match, Chhetri is better than Meesi, arguably the best player in the world currently. Chhetri has scored 0.62 goals per match as against 0.52 of Messi (64 goals from 124 matches). The Indian has also a better goal average than Cristiano (0.54 per match).
2. India 96th in FIFA World ranking, its best in 21 years
India has moved four places up to the 96th position in the FIFA World ranking. This is the country’s second best ranking — its previous best was the 94th position in February 1996.
India, which had been ranked 100th in the previous list released on June 1, has won two matches since the last list was published. This is also a huge confidence boost for the current squad which has moved 77 positions up from the 173rd rank on March 2015.
3. India beat Kenya 2-0 to win the Intercontinental Cup
India became the champions of Intercontinental Cup as they beat Kenya 2-0. Both the goals came in the first half as India took lead against Kenya after seven minutes into the game.
