1. Yogi Adityanath is new CM of U.P.
Yogi Adityanath took oath as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He is a five-time Member of Parliament from Gorakhpur. The State will also have two deputy chief ministers- Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma- both of whom were also front runners for the top post. While Mr. Maurya is the BJP’s State president, Mr. Sharma is the Mayor of Lucknow.
2. Meteorologist Sikka passes away
Dev Raj Sikka, former director of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, who first proposed a link between the El Nino phenomenon and the Indian monsoon, died of a cardiac arrest. Dr. Sikka was the first to report this connection in 1982 but that was the time when meteorologists would give more importance to Western scientists.
3. HC judge to head health regulatory commission
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee named senior Calcutta High Court judge Asim Kumar Roy as chairman of the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission. The Principal Secretary of the State’s Consumer Affairs Department, Anil Verma, will be vice-chairman of the 13-member body that will look into allegations of irregularities against private health facilities in the State. The Commission, provisions for which were made in The West Bengal Clinical Establishments (Registration, Regulation and Transparency) Bill, 2017, passed earlier this month, will have 11 members. The commission would include renowned doctors, a nurses’ representative, the director of medical education, a nominee from the State’s health department, representatives from the police and private health establishment.
4. Nobel laureate Derek Walcott Caribbean poet passes away
The Nobel-prize winning poet, playwright, and painter ‘Derek Alton Walcott’ has passed away at his home in Cap Estate, Saint Lucia. The prolific and versatile poet received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1992 after being shortlisted for the honor for many years.
