World Tourism Day – News Update 28th September 2015

The ministry of culture on Saturday announced free entry for tourists to nearly 200 ticketed monuments and museums across India except Bihar as a part of the World Tourism Day’s celebration on Sunday.
“The government is taking various measures to reach out to tourists and that the Centre is determined to attract more internationals tourist from across the world,” minister of state for culture Mahesh Sharma said.

The monuments which will be free for entry include 116 national monuments like Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Qutub Minar, Red Fort and 35 museum sites under the ASI, the ministry of culture said in a press release. Read More

India’s ace cueist Pankaj Advani has won 2015 IBSF World Billiards Championship (Point Form
at) in Adelaide, Australia. It was his overall 14th World title. He won 2015 IBSF World title by defeating Peter Gilchrist of Singapore by 1168 points. Advani is 14-time World Billiards and Snooker Champion. He is only player in the world to win world titles in all formats of both, Billiards and Snooker. He is the first cueist in the world to win the Grand double three times in 2005 and 2008 respectively. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain won 2015 Japanese Grand Prix title of Formula One. This was his overall eight victory of the season. He has won Australia, China, Bahrain, Canada, United Kingdom, Belgium and Italy 2015 Grand Prix titles of Formula One. It should be noted Lewis Hamilton has won highest number as compared to any other British driver in the history of Formula One. He is currently 5th on the all-time list of F1 with 41 wins.

4. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis win 2015 Guangzhou Open women’s doubles title

Indo-Swiss tennis pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have won women’s doubles title of 2015 Guangzhou Open Tennis Tournament. In the final match they defeated Chisese pair of Shilin Xu and Xiaodi You by 6-3, 6-1 score. It was overall seventh title of Sania Mirza in the 2015 season and sixth title with Martina Hingis. Till date both of them have won 6 of 13 titles they played in 2015 season including in Women’s Double category of Indian Wells, Miami Open, Charleston Open, Wimbledon and US Open. 5. Manipur Governor Dr. Syed Ahmad passes away

Manipur Governor Dr Syed Ahmad passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was 75. He was sworn in as the 16th Governor of Manipur in May 2015. Prior to this he had served as the eighth Governor of Jharkhand from August 2011. Dr. Ahmad was a senior Congress leader. He had served as the cabinet minister on two occasions during the Congress regime in Maharashtra. He was elected to Vidhan Sabha (state legislative assembly) for five times from the Nagpada constituency in Mumbai. He also served as a state minister in Maharashtra. Dr. Ahmad was also a writer and has authored Maktal se Manzil, Kafas se Chaman and Jange-Azaadi Me Urdu Shayari. His autobiography is Pagdandi se Shahar Tak. Read More

6. G-4 countries issue Joint Statement on UNSC Reforms

G-4 countries viz Brazil, Germany, India and Japan have issued a Joint Statement on United Nations Security Council Reforms (UNSC). It was issued after G-4 meeting held in New York,US which was called by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.

Stressed on more legitimate, representative and effective UNSC reforms to address the global conflicts and crises which have spiralled in recent years.

7. UN adopts agreement on Sustainable Development Goals

United Nations on 25 September 2015 unanimously adopted an ambitious agreement on the outcome document New Sustainable Development Agenda for the next 15 years i.e. till 2030. The document in this regard was adopted in 70th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and was announced by its President Mogens Lykketoft at the UN headquarters in New York.

The agreement outlines 17 non-binding goals termed as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 specific targets that comprise different socio-economic issues. Read More

8. MOM completes one year of mission life around Mars

India’s globally acclaimed Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) spacecraft also known as Mangalyaan has completed one year of the mission life around Mars on 24 September 2015. During the entire one year, the spacecraft had acquired a large set of data of the red planet using all five payloads mounted on it by completing more than 120 orbits. To mark first anniversary of MOM, Ahmedabad based Space Applications Centre (SAC) of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) released Mar Atlas mobile application. Mar Atlas contains compilation of photos taken at varying spatial resolutions by the Mars Colour Camera (MCC) fitted on board of the spacecraft. It also contains results obtained by other payload results in a form of scientific atlas. Read More

9. Volkswagen AG appoints Matthias Mueller as new CEO

German auto maker Volkswagen AG has appointed Matthias Mueller as its new chief executive officer (CEO). Prior to this appointment, he was serving as CEO of Volkswagen’s subsidiary Porsche AG. He will succeed Martin Winterkorn who had resigned from office following an emissions cheating scandal (dubbed as Diesel Dope) described as a moral and political disaster. Matthias Mueller first priority as CEO would be to win back trust of investors following a plunge in Volkswagen AG stock by 30 per cent over the Diesel Dope scandal. The scandal had damaged the reputation of world’s largest car manufacturer’s in terms of sales and had threatened its business. Read More
