Odisha state cabinet approved ‘Fisheries Policy, 2015′, with an objective to increase the productivity and production of fish from island, marine and brackishwater resources. As per the Odisha Fisheries Policy: The state government has set targets 7.15 lakh tonne of total fish production by the end of 2019-20 from present level of 4.13 lakh tonnes. Inland fish production target has set to 5.30 lakh tonnes from 2.63 lakh tonnes for the next five years. The freshwater fish productivity is aimed to be increased to 3.5 tonnes per hectare from 2.13 tonnes per hectare through extensive farming practices. State government to develop 15,000 hectares of new ponds and tanks for freshwater aquaculture in 30 districts by 2020. Read More

2. India, Bangladesh ink MoU to fight fake currency

India and Bangladesh – News Update 17th August 2015

India and Bangladesh have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for full cooperation to tackle the menace of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) smuggling. The MoU was signed at a maiden meeting of the Joint Task Force on Fake Currency Notes (JTFFC) in Dhaka held on 12 and 13 August, 2015. Key facts Both countries have agreed to share intelligence inputs on operatives engaged in circulating FICN on real time basis in order to curb Advance note sorting machines: India will provide these machines to Bangladesh to detect FICN circulation at international airports, immigration points, integrated crossing points, banks and financial institutions in Bangladesh. State-of-the-art facilities: India will establish these facilities for examination of fake currency notes in Bangladesh. Read More

Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to establish a pan-India National fingerprint database to aid in the speedy identification of criminals and investigation of crimes across the country. Key facts The database will have fingerprint records of nearly 28 lakh convicts from all the states including of those who were arrested for criminal offences. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) will be nodal agency for creating this cloud based national record by linking finger print database of all States and Union Territories bureaus. The integration of all fingerprint databases will help police from any part of the country to furnish criminal finger prints record on real time basis. Read More

4. Greenko to sell India’s assets to GIC of Singapore for Rs. 1,600 crore

Hyderabad based renewable energy company Greenko has agreed to sell its India assets to Singapore based sovereign wealth fund company GIC for about 1,600 crore Rupees. Greenko has signed a non-binding deal with GIC for the sale of the company’s trading activities, assets and all its shares in Greenko Mauritius which also comprise ownership and operation of clean energy projects in India. About Greenko: It is Hyderabad based market leading owner and operator of clean energy projects which includes wind, hydropower, natural gas and biomass in India. 5. Housing.com acquires HomeBuy360

Mumbai based Real estate listing portal Housing.com has acquired Bengaluru-based customer relationship management software company HomeBuy360. The software company was acquired in a cash deal of US 2 million dollars or 13 crore rupees. This deal will help Housing.com to strive for efficiency in the Indian real estate sector and to bring down their sales and operating costs. HomeBuy360 was a cloud-based a sales lifecycle management platform company which facilitated connecting developers, agents and buyers. It also was niched in streamlining the entire real estate sales lifecycle, by managing customer relations, tracking inventory and in effect drives efficiencies in their sale operations. Read More

6. Ram Nath Kovind sworn in as Governor of Bihar

Ram Nath Kovind sworn-in as 36th Governor of Bihar Acting Chief Justice of Patna High Court Iqbal Ahmed Ansari administered him the oath of office and secrecy as per provisions of Article 159 of Constitution. Mr. Kovind will succeed Keshri Nath Tripathi (Governor of West Bengal) who was holding additional charge of Bihar. 7. Taj Mahal becomes first monument in world to have Twitter account

The iconic Mughal monument Taj Mahal became the first historical monuments in the world to have a Twitter account of its own. The monument’s official Twitter handle @TajMahal was launched by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on eve of 69th Independence Day in Lucknow. About Taj Mahal Taj Mahal is a 17th century white marble mausoleum located on the southern bank of Yamuna River in the present city of Agra. Then Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1628–1658) had commissioned the monument in 1632 to house the tomb of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is based on Mughal architectural style and was constructed under guidance of chief architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Read More

8. India imposed Anti-dumping duty on potassium carbonate imports from Taiwan, South Korea

India has imposed definitive anti-dumping duty for period of five years on Potassium Carbonate imports from Taiwan and South Korea. The duty was imposed by Union Finance Ministry based on the recommendations of the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping Duty (DGAD) that works under the aegis of Union Commerce Ministry. This move was taken following the findings of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) which concluded that Potassium Carbonate imports from Taiwan are entering in the Indian market at dumped prices. The revenue department has imposed anti-dumping duty of 153 US dollar per tonne on Potassium Carbonate imports from Taiwan and 9.45 US dollar per tonne in case of imports from UNID Co Ltd, and 123.86 US dollar per tonne from all other exports from South Korea. 9. Union Government unveils Indradhanush Mission for PSBs

Union Government has launched a seven pronged plan called Indradhanush Mission to revamp functioning of public sector banks (PSBs). It was launched by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi. Facts about Indradhanush Mission The seven shades of Indradhanush mission include appointments, de-stressing PSBs, capitalisation, empowerment, framework of accountability and governance reforms. It seeks to achieve the objective of economic growth revival through improving credit and minimising the political interference in the functioning of PSBs. 10. Union Government to form Bank Board Bureau

Union Government has decided to set up a Bank Board Bureau (BBB) to monitor key performance indicators of two dozen public sector banks (PSBs). It was announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jailtley as part of a seven-pronged revamp plan for PSBs dubbed as Indradhanush (rainbow) plan. Facts about Bank Board Bureau Bank Board Bureau (BBB) will start the functioning from next financial year i.e. from 1st April 2016 and the selection of its member will start in the next six months. It will replace existing system Appointments Board in which appointments for top level jobs at PSBs are made by an appointments committee led by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor. Read More

11. Abhishek Verma wins gold medal in Archery World Cup

Ace Indian Archer Abhishek Verma has won gold medal in Archery World Cup in the stage 3 in the compound men’s individual section. In the individual final held in Wroclaw in Poland he defeated Esmaeil Ebadi of Iran by 148-145 score in the five round match. In the summit clash, Verma had shot 13 perfect 10s pointers, including five arrows closest to the centre from the total 15 arrows. It should be noted that Verma is currently ranked 18 in the world in the men’s individual Archery. He hails from Delhi and earlier had won silver medal in the Asian Games. Read More

12. Kerala Government declares state as ‘Digital State’

Kerala Government has declared state totally digital, thus becoming first state in the country to achieve it. It was announced by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy during his Independence Day speech held in the capital Thiruvananthapuram. This declaration was made considering the rapid digital strides of the state which has achieved 100 percent mobile connectivity, maximum digital banking, 75 percent e-literacy, broadband connectivity upto the Panchayat level, linking bank accounts with Aadhar cards and e-district plan in all districts. The state government also has announced that the second phase of digital literacy will further take forward the digital revolution in the state and envisages having wi-fi hotspots in all local bodies, total mobile Governance. 13. Gujarat Government declares ban on use of plastic in state

Gujarat Government has declared ban on the use of plastic in the State for the first time. It was announced by Gujarat’s first women Chief Minister Anandiben Patel after unfurling the National Flag at the Independence Day ceremony in Mahisagar district of Gujarat. This decision was taken keeping in view protection of environment, cleanliness and cattle health. It should be several municipal bodies in the state already have banned use of plastic bags thinner than 40 microns. Apart from plastic ban decision, she also announced that 159 towns and 8 cities in the state now have 100 per cent in-house toilets and nearly 8 lakh toilets have been built in rural areas. 14. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new campaign ‘Start-up India; Stand up India’

On the eve of celebration of 69th Independence Day at Red Fort Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new campaign ‘Start-up India; Stand up India’ an initiative to promote bank finance for Start-ups (an entrepreneurial venture). The campaign was announced with an aim to boost entrepreneurship among the youth and to create employment in India. As per the initiative PM urged 1.25 lakh bank branches to provide finance to at least one Dalit or Adivasi and at least one woman entrepreneur. The initiative is expected to open a new dimension to entrepreneurship and to set up a network of start-ups in the country. It also aims to make India a number one country in Start-ups. Read More

15. Boxing Coach Swatantra Raj Singh recommended for Dronacharya award

Boxing Coach Swatantra Raj Singh has been recommended for the prestigious life time achievement Dronacharya award 2015. Along with Singh, Nihar Amin (Swimming) and Harbans Singh (Athletics) also have been chosen for this year’s Dronacharya award. Their names were finalised by the award selection committee meeting presided by former Olympic Badminton Player Dipankar Bhattacharya and comprised of Woman Swimmer Bula Chaudhry and Woman Athlete Chaini Wilson.
